As this new Scouting season begins, one of our District’s biggest priorities is to make sure that each unit has a dedicated Committee level Unit Membership Chairperson (UMC). Most units have a person or two who dabble with the membership role, but it’s not typically their only role within the unit Committee, and many units are showing mixed results with retaining existing Scouts and recruiting new.
To help this along, we’ll have a UMC training session with emphasis on the role of the Pack UMC on September 19th at 7pm at Pouch’s Berlin Lodge. The agenda will be a discussion of the role, a few different outreach methods (school, chartered org, community), how to plan a successful fall recruiting campaign including an open house, tracking leads on the beascout.org site and a few other items.
We’ll have another session with Troop emphasis around the time our Webelos begin to crossover to our Troops in the Jan-Mar time frame.
One of side benefits of getting all of the membership staff together will be the collaboration opportunities, so please plan make sure that a representative from each Pack will attend. Please confirm attendance by emailing Matt Gaor, our District Membership Chair at CubmasterMatt@Pack6si.com, or by calling Matt at 877-90 Pack 6 (877-907-2256).
Please note that the 2012 Archdiocesan Annual Catholic Scout Retreat has been cancelled.

SUBJECT: Structure of the Order of the Arrow in the Greater New York Councils
DATE: August 30, 2012
After careful consideration over the course of many months, I have decided that combining the councils’ five Order of the Arrow lodges into a single lodge will allow the OA to better fulfill the Mission of the Lodge and the Purpose of the Order of the Arrow. The change will also result in a stronger program for the youth in GNYC and in closer alignment between the activities of the OA and the councils’ strategic priorities as set forth in the recently adopted Strategic Plan. Ultimately, I envision a combined lodge that rivals the best in the country and attracts the top leadership, both youth and adult, that the BSA has to offer.

Effective Jan. 1, 2013, what is now known as the “unit charter fee” will be renamed the “unit liability insurance fee” and will increase in cost from $20 to $40 yearly.
As a result, the new fee will begin with units that have December 31, 2012 charter expiration dates (a charter period beginning Jan. 1, 2013).
All units, including Exploring posts, are required to pay this annual fee—100 percent of which goes into the general liability insurance program—when submitting their charter renewal applications. This fee helps defray expenses of the general liability insurance program.
