[From the Staten Island Advance]
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — They started as rectangular blocks of wood, but Sunday they were shaped into cars that zoomed down a track in the center court of the Staten Island Mall. It was part of an annual tradition most Boy Scouts consider a cherished memory of their youth: The Pinewood Derby.
“All they get, it’s literally a block of wood, a rectangular block of wood,” said Jerry Gross, publicity chair for the Staten Island Council of Boy Scouts. “Then, with an adult, usually a parent, they make a car.”

The Race is Still On
Hello Race Fans! Get ready to Start Your Engines!!!
A reminder that the names of the winners from all Cub Scout units should have been sent to Racemaster Rich Hahl (email@example.com) by now. A Scout who has not been pre-registered via email by the Cubmaster or his delegate will not be able to race on Sunday with no exceptions. In other words, a Scout can not just show up and state that they were the Wolf winner of Pack X’s Pinewood Derby race, the information must come from the Cubmaster.
To All Cubmasters on Staten Island,
Please provide the training status of ALL of your Webelos leaders to John Fiore, SI District Webelos Chairman. John is also the SI Webelos Training, Activities and Program Director, and SI Webelos Roundtable Commissioner.
John needs to know that each of your Webelos leaders has been trained in Youth Protection and Cub Leader Specific Training for Webelos Leaders, as well as Outdoor Leader Skills for Webelos Leaders (OWL) training. Please include whether they have Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO) training. Please include a list of all of your Webelos leaders, and what training, if any, they have had.
You can send the lists, and any questions to john at firstname.lastname@example.org.
As submitted to the Staten Island Advance:
Meeting at Berlin Lodge in Pouch Camp, Seaview, the Aquehonga District Committee of the Boy Scouts of America held its monthly meeting. Aquehonga District Chair Brenda Gazinski called the meeting to order.
Two major youth events are this weekend. On Saturday, the Boy Scouts will hold their bi-annual Klondike Derby at Pouch Camp. Scouts must construct and race a travois, a sled used by the Plains Indians, as well as compete at nine different skill stations. The Island-wide Finals of the Cub Scout Pinewood Derby will take place at the Staten Island Mall this Sunday, February 10. Pinewood Derby cars are built from kits by each scout with an adult partner. This year marks the beginning of a new format for race car classifications, so five Scouts from each Pack will come to the Staten Island Mall to compete. The winners of each class (Tiger, Wolf, Bear, Junior Webelos and Senior Webelos) will advance to the citywide finals in the Spring. The first group of cars from the Tiger Scouts will race starting at 11 AM. Each group will follow, with the Senior Webelos racing at 3 PM. The top three cars from each division will go on to compete in the New York City finals later this year.
