STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — They started as rectangular blocks of wood, but Sunday they were shaped into cars that zoomed down a track in the center court of the Staten Island Mall. It was part of an annual tradition most Boy Scouts consider a cherished memory of their youth: The Pinewood Derby.
“All they get, it’s literally a block of wood, a rectangular block of wood,” said Jerry Gross, publicity chair for the Staten Island Council of Boy Scouts. “Then, with an adult, usually a parent, they make a car.”
