NER Area 2 Venturing Communication

The NER Area 2 Venturing VOA had a very successful planning weekend on Sep 13-15.  The VOA developed the goals for our Area Venturing, established our calendar, put together our “Save the Date” flyer for our Apex along with our first meeting and did some teambuilding as well.  All four officers and three advisors attended.

I have attached the Schedule, an introduction of our officers and our Goals/Strategies, as well as a few other items.

BALOO and OWLS Training – 16 November 2013

Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation and Outdoor Webelos Leader Skills

When: 16 November, 2013
Where: Berlin Lodge, Pouch Camp
Cost: $10 per person

You asked for it and now we have it. One course. One day. Two fantastic learning experiences. Any adult who has an interest in camping and learning outdoor skills can take this course.  Designed for leaders who are in charge of Pack and Webelos overnight activities, this course covers the rules, guidelines, and safety considerations for “Pack Family Camping” and “Webelos Campouts”. It teaches the why and how of Cub Scout camping; planning, equipment, meal preparation, fire safety, stoves, and lanterns; first aid and sanitation; nature hikes, games, and campfire programs. Participants will receive both BALOO and OWLS certification. Local Tour Permits require that a Pack must have a BALOO-certified adult leader attend Cub Scout Campouts and overnight activities.

This is a great course for Tiger, Cub or Webelos parents who have little or no camping experience. It is an entry-level outdoor training with emphasis on outdoor activities and skills pertaining to and geared toward Cub Scout camping and outdoor experiences.

Philmont’s 2015 Registration Period Opens Oct. 29

[From Bryan on Scouting]

It seems like just about everyone wants to go (or go back) to Philmont. And so when it comes to the hiking mecca’s 12-day and seven-day summer expeditions, demand far exceeds supply.

That’s why Philmont Scout Ranch has in place a lottery system, giving interested Scout troops and Venturing crews a fair shot at scoring a spot at the New Mexico high-adventure base.

Mark your calendar now for when the 2015 lottery opens on Oct. 29, 2013. Entries will be taken online into November, and a random draw takes place in early December. You’ll find a registration packet online at Philmont’s official website by mid-October.

In the meantime, check out this terrific new promotional video, which features testimonials from Scouts, Scouters and Venturers fresh off a Philmont trek. The common theme in their comments: “This was one of the best experiences of my life.”
