Volunteer Opportunities in the Greenbelt

The Greenbelt is located in the Heart of Staten Island with acres of natural areas, forests, parks and trails. We are looking for people, like you, who want to help keep the Greenbelt, natural and beautiful. There something for everyone!

Thursday, April 26, 2012: Race Prep for HRC, Assist staff with the assembly and distribution of race bags and shirts for the High Rock Challenge. Colony Hall, 460 Brielle Avenue, 3:00 pm.

Saturday, April 28, 2012: High Rock Challenge, 501 Brielle Avenue, SI NY 10314. 6:00am-3:00pm. Assist staff with race challenges, food distribution, and activities for the day.

Trail Maintainer Workshop

Are you interested in the outdoors?

Would you like to learn how to restore and maintain trails, but don’t know where to start? Staten Island Parks and NY/NJ Trail Conference have volunteer opportunities available.

Join us for an orientation session to discover the many ways in which you can give back to the open space you enjoy so much!

No previous experience is necessary and beginners are welcome. Volunteers will spend the morning in a classroom environment and then head out on to the trail for hands-on instruction.

Summer of Service INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY- Washington, DC

The Institute on Philanthropy and Voluntary Service, an academic internship program focused on the nonprofit sector, is accepting applications for summer 2012 and is ideal for Scouts active in service and volunteerism on their campuses and in the community.

Students who complete their application by February 7 will be considered for our Priority Deadline, receiving priority consideration for admission and scholarships. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until the final deadline of March 7.

Snow Removal Program for Senior Citizens

The Senior Department at the Jewish Community Center is in need of helpful troops to volunteer for snow removal as needed, for senior citizens on Staten Island.

Greenbelt Volunteer Opportunities

The Greenbelt has two opportunities where we could use volunteers. Please let me know if you would be available to assist.

October 15, 2011: It’s My Park Day – 10:00 am – 2:00 pm Egbertville Ravine Restoration. Meet at the entry road to the Eger Nursing Home at the intersection of Manor Road and Rockland Avenue. Wear appropriate clothing – long sleeves and pants. Light snacks provided.

November 5, 2011: Walker Pond Clean Up – High Rock Park. Meet at the Summit Avenue entrance. Summit Avenue is located off Richmond Road, SINY 10306 10:00 am – 12:00 pm. Join Staff cleaning debris from Walker pond. If you have tall boots or waders, please bring them.

Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Group Volunteers

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is the world’s largest voluntary health agency dedicated to blood cancers, and the Light The Night Walk is one of our biggest fundraising campaigns, with Walks taking place in over 200 communities each Fall.

The New York City chapter hosts three of these Walks every year in Queens, Staten Island, and Manhattan.  Last year, the New York City participants raised $3.5 MILLION to support the mission of LLS: to cure Leukemia, Lymphoma, Myeloma, and Hodgkin’s Disease and to improve the quality of life of patients.

I am extending invite to 10th anniversary observance of 9/11 at The Healing Garden, Friday, September 9, 2011 at 10:00 am to the scouts.

The Healing Garden located between Richmond Road, Targee Street, Clove Road and Narrows Road South in Concord across from St. Sylvester’s Church diagonally across Rescue 5.
