Staten Island Boy Scout Council meeting 9/30/14

Gathering Tuesday evening at Café del Mondo, Willowbrook, the Staten Island Council of the Boy Scouts of America held its first meeting of the Scouting year. Council President Chris Williams opened the meeting.

Council members were shown a new publicity card that highlights Staten Island Scouting and Scouting FAQs  — for example there were over 4,200 youth involved in all the Scouting programs last year on Staten Island, and that about one in six West Point Cadets are Eagle Scouts, as were one in eight NASA astronauts.

Retired Yankee great Mariano Rivera is headlining this year’s recruiting effort with a video at the GNYC main website (www.bsa-gnyc.org).  New Scouts will receive a special patch with Mariano and the logo “I’m with Mo.”

Recent events were reviewed.  Over 700 Scouts and family attended special nights at the Staten Island Yankees, and Scouts again were part of the Richmond County Fair. Adult and leader events such as the Recognition Dinner and Golf outing were discussed.

Upcoming events include the Weblos-a-ree in mid October, and the Ghost-a-ree on October 25^th.  There are also several training courses, and the November 13^th Staten Island Luncheon honoring James Mitchell of Visiting Nurse Association of Staten Island, John Sollazzo of the United Retired Firefighters Association and Dennis Gabel of the NYC Housing Authority.  There was also a discussion of expanding the November Scouting for Food Drive to involve Scouts beyond just collecting food at participating food stores.  Council members were urged to get units involved in the November 11 Veterans Day Parade in Manhattan.

 

Scouting continues to emphasize STEM activites.  There is a Tech Triangle tour in Brooklyn in mid-October, and special STEM camp this summer.  More information is available at both the Staten Island & GNYC websites.

A reminder that Eagle Scouts can check for upcoming events for Eagle Scouts of all ages at www.bsa-gnyc.org/eaglereserve for information.  Staten Island Assemblyman & Eagle Scout Joe Borelli will speak at the Staten Island event on November 18.  Speakers in other boroughs include Congressman Joseph Crowley, Retired 4 Star General Raymond E. Johns, Jr. and Father Joseph M. McShane, President of Fordham University.

Camping was reviewed. Staten Island attendance was up at all three venues – Pouch Day Camp here on Staten Island, Cub World at the Alpine, NJ camp and Ten Mile River near Monticello, NY.  There are several exciting possibilities being explored for Pouch Camp that will be further explored at the Greater New York Council meeting next month.  The need to upgrade some facilities at the camp to make it more attractive as a base for units visiting New York City was discussed.

In closing, Council President Williams urged Council members to discuss the proposals discussed at the meeting with their fellow leaders and send comments back to him to be presented at the GNYC October meeting.

BALOO & OWLS Training in a single course. Sat. Nov. 15, 2014@Pouch. Pre-registration is required.

You asked for it and now we have it. One course. One day. Two fantastic learning experiences. Any adult who has an interest in camping and learning outdoor skills can take this course. Designed for leaders who are in charge of Pack and Webelos overnight activities, this course covers the rules, guidelines, and safety considerations for “Pack Family Camping” and “Webelos Campouts”. It teaches the why and how of Cub Scout camping; planning, equipment, meal preparation, fire safety, stoves, and lanterns; first aid and sanitation; nature hikes, games, and campfire programs. Participants will receive both BALOO and OWLS certification. Local Tour Permits require that a Pack must have a BALOO-certified adult leader attend Cub Scout Campouts and overnight activities.

This is a great course for Tiger, Cub or Webelos parents who have little or no camping experience. Itis an entry level outdoor training with emphasis on outdoor activities and skills pertaining to and geared toward Cub Scout camping and outdoor experiences.

Cub Scout Leader Specific is a required training for all new

Pack leaders -Tiger, Cub Scout (Wolf & Bear), Webelos, Cubmaster, Pack Trainer & Pack Committee. This Training covers the topics of den and pack meeting planning, pack finance and management, special activity planning and secrets of successful leaders.

The session includes special breakouts for each leader position. The pre-course requirement is that every person should take “This is Scouting” offered on line at myscouting.org (after you register or sign on – training drop down – e-learning – This is Scouting). We will also be offering an overview of the changes to the Cub Scouting Program which will go into effect in June, 2015

GNYC Raft-O-Ree! – 19-21 September 2014

This coming September 19-21 go rafting down the Delaware River as part of the GNYC Raft-O-Ree!

The 2014 Raft-o-ree is a Council sponsored activity under the direction of the Council Activities Committee, with a goal to host a target of ~200 attendees for the weekend.  Attendees will raft the Delaware River from Skinners Falls to TMR Landing, with a stop for lunch at the half way point of Narrowsburg.  Transportation and rafting will be provided by Landers River Trips.  Accommodations for campers will be at Camp Keowa.  A Saturday evening campfire show will provide awards and fellowship for attendees.

What is the Youth Speaker & Honor Guard Training Seminar?
Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Explorers and Venturers attending the event will learn practical public speaking techniques, tips on speech-writing, proper etiquette, and how to perform in the BSA Honor Guard during fundraising events throughout the year. In addition, participants must bring a prepared speech about Scouting and read aloud to the group, receiving constructive and positive
feedback from seminar leaders.
